Antibiotics are losing their power

Most people have used antibiotics at least once in their life with a high percentage of those having used them more often. Now, 85 years after the discovery of penicillin and the start of antibiotic use, there is a global problem in the proliferation of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria.

Antibiotics are vital lifesaving medicines and unless they are used properly and only when needed there is a risk of them not working next time because resistance may have developed. Resistant infections are harder to treat and can be associated with higher rates of illness and death. Appropriate use of antibiotics means we preserve this miracle cure for tomorrow and the future.

The facts:

  1. the overuse and misuse of antibiotics means bacterial infections that were once easily cured with antibiotics are becoming harder to treat. This is due to antibiotic resistance

  2. antibiotics don’t kill viruses

  3. the common cold and flu are viral and cannot be treated with antibiotics

  4. the demand for antibiotic therapy for a cold or flu is considered to be one of the drivers of antibiotic resistance

  5. ‘Superbugs’ are bacteria that are resistant to several different antibiotics.

  6. resistance is caused by gene mutation in the bacteria after being in contact with an antibiotic. It’s a survival mechanism.

  7. resistant strains of bacteria can spread to other people

You can prevent antibiotic resistance by:

  1. understanding that most people don’t need antibiotics for coldsand flu because they are caused by viruses

  2. telling your doctor you only want an antibiotic if it is really necessary

  3. taking the right dose of your antibiotic at the right time, as prescribed by your doctor

  4. taking your antibiotics for as long as your doctor tells you to

  5. taking simple steps to avoid infections and prevent them from spreading

  6. not sharing your antibiotic with others or keeping them for next time

How to reduce the side effects of antibiotics

The most common side effects of antibiotics are gut (intestine) related disturbances such as diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Thrush (Candida albicans) is experienced by up to 10% of those who take antibiotics.

These side effects result from the antibiotic inflaming the gut lining and disturbing the balance of good and bad bacteria (microflora). Good gut flora is important for good digestion, the production and absorption of vitamins and absorption of calcium, magnesium and iron. They protect the lining of the gut which has an important role in the bodys’ immune system. They also provide a barrier effect against pathogens (bad bacteria).

Restoring the normal balance of good gut flora and reducing inflammation to the gut is vital in ensuring ongoing good health and maintaining a supportive immune system, especially if the immune system has already been compromised by the need to take antibiotics.

Taking high quality probiotic supplements can assist in alleviating the side effects and restoring good health.

What is a good quality probiotic?

  1. One that contains strains of microflora that have been researched as beneficial

  2. Contains a therapeutic dose of probiotics

  3. Guaranteed to be viable (alive)

Which one to use for antibiotic use?

  1. While taking antibiotics, the strain Saccharomyces boulardii may help reduce diarrhoea and inflammation

  2. After finishing antibiotic treatment, strains such as Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus have shown in research to assist in restoring the integrity of the intestinal lining and reduce antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

  3. There is a range of probiotics available depending on the symptoms.

  4. Probiotics may be taken at the same time as antibiotics, however, they have greatest benefit when taken in between antibiotic dose. It is important to continue probiotics for a few weeks after the antibiotic course is finished to ensure proliferation of good gut flora

  5. Consult a natural health practitioner to ensure the most appropriate strains and dosage to ensure optimum recovery of any antibiotic related side effects
