It’s Movember – Don’t Forget the Boys

We are constantly bombarded with campaigns to raise awareness for women’s health and it seems that men’s health is often awarded second best. November is a time to focus on men’s well-being inline with the Movember campaign to raise funds for prostate cancer research.

I am not an advocate of raising money for pharmaceutical research, but I do believe in bringing chronic illness to attention, so preventative approaches can be put into place.

Here are some tips for a healthy prostate from recent scientific studies:

  1. 30 minutes of non-stressful exercise daily reduces the risk of prostate cancer.

  2. A high fibre diet has been shown to prevent prostate cancer progression.

  3. Obesity, especially visceral/gut fat may contribute to the progression of benign prostate hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and prostate cancer.

  4. Sleeping less than 6 hours over a prolonged period increases the risk of prostate cancer.

  5. Stress reduces the effectiveness of prostate cancer therapies
