Massage Therapies

Remedial / Deep tissue massage

The purpose of Remedial massage therapy is to increase the blood flow, locate and repair damaged tissues and support the body's own repair mechanisms. Specialist strokes and movements aim to support the affected areas, and allow the healing process to take place. Regular massage will not only ease tension pain and joint stiffness, it helps stimulate the cardiovascular system, detoxes the body and improves your immune function. Remedial massage is firm and thorough; the therapist will assess you, then apply appropriate techniques including remedial and deep tissue massage, trigger points or acupressure points, treatment may including passive stretching. Remedial Therapists have an intensive 18 month full time study including 110 hours of clinical training.

Relaxation / Swedish massage

This type of massage is designed to relax muscles by applying soft but firm pressure to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. This massage will aid recovery from muscular strain by flushing out lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes, from the tissues. It will increase circulation without increasing heart rate, and stretch the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and soothes the nerves to reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is often encouraged as a regular program for stress management.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of massage which uses applied pressure to the energy channels or meridians. This will assist the body to bring the flow of energy back into balance. In Shiatsu therapy, tension in the walls of the energy channels can be removed with correct pressure, which assists in revitalising the peristaltic rhythm, inherent in each of the energy channels of the body. When tension in the channels builds up this free-flowing of energy becomes impaired causing stagnation in the flow of energy, which is a precursor to disease. Shiatsu will treat the root cause of a person’s problem, by focusing on aligning the energy. Most people feel revitalised after a Shiatsu session but if your energy levels are low you will possibly feel tired as your body's energy has been directed to the internal organs for optimum healing to occur. With further sessions you will start to feel your energy come alive, an indication your energy system has been positively charged.

Prenatal massage

Prenatal Massage is specially designed to support and nurture pregnant women and their changing bodies. Prenatal Massage will ease aches and pains, relax muscles, improve circulation, reduce swelling in hands and feet, and relieve fatigue. Women lie on their back or front supported with pillows if during the early stages of pregnancy. When this becomes uncomfortable women lie semi reclined for face up work and on their side supported by pillows for deep relaxing massage.

Pregnancy causes changes your posture and centre of gravity. This puts a lot of stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, so that your pelvic joints are less stable, and your pelvis may shift and forward. The extra weight you're carrying plus postural shifts often cause aching lower back, neck and shoulders. Our trained prenatal massage therapists know where a pregnant woman's sore spots are likely to be. Prenatal massage treatment is also deeply relaxing and calms the body and mind. Acupressure massage can also help to induce labour when women are full term.

Maya Abdominal massage

Maya Abdominal Massage is centred on the ancient Mayan techniques that reposition pelvic and abdominal organs that have dropped and restricted the five channels of flow in the body: blood, vein, lymph, nerve and chi energy. The technique works for both men and women by relieving congestion and blockages to improve the flow of chi and fluids of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems to prevent the progression of chronic diseases. As with any other natural healing, Maya Abdominal Massage seeks to restore the body to its natural balance, known as homeostasis. The work is best known for the correction of the prolapsed, fallen, retro verted or tilted uterus and for the relief of many common reproductive, digestive, urinary and bladder complaints.
