 FAQ

What is a TENS machine?

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a professionally researched, tried and tested device used for effective drug free pain management. TENS machines have been used in European hospitals and clinics since the 1960’s. The latest TENS unit’s are digitally advanced, small, portable, battery powered devices which send pulsed electrical stimulus to nerves via electrodes (pads) placed on the skin.

Why use a TENS machine?

Drug free pain control. Quick & effective pain relief. Easy to use and portable. Does not cause drowsiness. Non-invasive giving freedom to move and walk about. Can be used for as long as required. Can be used in conjunction with other prescribed drugs.

How does a TENS unit work?

Stimulates your bodies release of natural pain killers similar to morphine (endorphins and encephalins) which reduces your sense of pain. Faster electrical impulses block out slower pain messages travelling to the brain. Provides a sense of control over pain and gives an alternative focus.

What does a TENS feel like?

The user will experience a pleasant tingling sensation on the skin where the pads are placed.

How long will it take for the TENS machine to work?

The TENS machine will start to work straight away by blocking pain signals, and releasing endorphins. You will need to use the TENS for about 30 minutes to reach maximum endorphin affect and it will last about 30 minutes after the TENS has been switched off.

How long should a TENS machine be used for?

The TENS machine can be used for as long as desired, typically 30 minutes up to 2 hours, several times a day if needed.

What is an EMS machine?

The EMS machine stands for Electrical Muscular Stimulation sometimes also called STIM. This machine can treat many muscular conditions or improve sports performance. The EMS strengthens weak muscles by electronically stimulating muscles to contract. It can also be used to tone and improve circulation.

What should I know about using TENS?

TENS has been professionally researched, tried and tested since the 1960’s. However there are a few precautions. Do not use over broken or desensitised skin. If you are pregnant do not use before 36 weeks unless approved by your doctor. Do not use if you have a pacemaker. Seek advice from doctor if you have epilepsy.

Can I use a TENS machine with other pain relief methods?

Yes, you may continue using the TENS machine with other methods such as prescribed medication.

Our thousands of customers who have hired or purchased our TENS machines and kindly provided us with feedback and wonderful stories. Many of these may be viewed on our Labour TENS blog.

We recommend you always have your pain diagnosed before you use a TENS and seek medical advice.

Who can benefit from EMS?

Athletes often use these machines for pre and post exercise work outs.

EMS -Electronic Muscular Stimulation

Voluntary electro-muscular stimulation can be used to strengthen and tone muscles, and improve circulation.  Electrical Muscle Stimulation EMS or STIM has been used for many years to stimulate muscle and nerve fibres to treat a number of muscle and nerve related conditions.EMS/STIM uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. By placing electrodes on the skin in various locations the physical therapist can recruit the appropriate muscle fibers. Contracting the muscle via electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscle. The physical therapist can change the current setting to allow for a forceful or gentle muscle contraction. Along with increasing muscle strength, the contraction of the muscle also promotes blood supply to the area that assists in healing.

Rehabilitation patients post surgery, muscular recovery, muscular atrophy.

Beauty therapists and home users for cosmetic results.

EMS for Liposis and Anti-cellulite Treatments

Electro-muscular stimulation is used to strengthen and tone muscles, anti-cellulite treatment and encourage removal of fat deposits (liposis). Electrode pads are placed on the area, and a mild current will artificially stimulate the muscles in that area. You will feel a tingling or buzzing sensation. Results seen in 2-4 weeks.
